GSA Exhibition in the Wallsworth Centre Atrium at Nature in Art
- 22nd February - 6th March 2011
Our thanks go to Simon Trapnell for allowing the GSA to hold an Exhibition during the hugely popular annual Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition at Nature in Art next year. The only proviso is that it is based on a nature theme. We will need a title for the exhibition so please let me know if you have any suggestions.
This will be an additional venue to our usual exhibitions and because the room isn’t as large as St John’s Church we shall have to limit the size and number of framed paintings submitted by each member, although we do hope to use screens to give us more hanging space.
As always, we will require help from members with setting up, stewarding and also taking the exhibition down, please. We already have strong ties with Nature in Art and this will be a marvellous opportunity for the GSA. I hope we can count on your support to make it a success.

ABOUT EXHIBITIONS
Whilst thinking of exhibitions it is perhaps appropriate to consider two issues:-
Copyright
Jackie Garner has reminded us about the real problems which can arise for individual members and the Society if work submitted for exhibition or sale is a copy of another person's painting or photograph made without their permission. If the original is by a professional artist or photographer whose livelihood is affected by copying then they may sue both the member and the Society for breach of copyright.
GSA exhibition submission forms contain a declaration that all submitted work is original – please ensure that it is so to avoid any potential problems.
Selection
At the AGM, following a letter from a member, Marilyn, as Chairman, spoke at length about the selection of work for exhibitions. We must remind members that election to Full (i.e. exhibiting) Member only gives the right to submit work for exhibition. As far back as I can delve into the archives it has long been the practice of the Society to employ an independent selector to choose which submitted work will be exhibited
The standard of the work in our exhibitions has been improving steadily over the past few years raising the prestige of the Society. I believe that this has been due to the efforts of our members to improve their own work and the scrutiny which it is placed under by the selectors.
We all have our off days when we feel that we could have done better so please don’t be too disappointed if sometimes your submitted work is not exhibited. It is not a reflection on you - just the subjective opinion of the selector in a subjective field. Next time you might be the winner of the President’s Cup!
